KNITTING
- Have an extra ball of yarn remaining after completing a project? Use the yarn to knit/crochet something (such as a hat or striped scarf) for charity. Baby, chemo, and hats for warmth are always in need somewhere within the community.
- Knitting socks? Cast all stitches onto one needle and then knit each stitch off onto the 3 or 4 needles as required in the pattern. This makes a nicer top edge on the sock and helps to keep the needles from twisting prior to joining.
- Want to minimize finishing on a sweater? Instead of binding off shoulder stitches, place them on a stitch holder until all pieces of garment are completed. Then holding right sides together of front and back do a 3-needle bind off for each shoulder seam.
CROCHETING
Making a swatch for a crocheted garment is a necessary step in the process if you want the garment to fit properly when finished.
When turning on single crochet rows, chain 1 stitch; when turning on double crochet rows, chain 3.
Want to try a new crochet stitch? Make an 8" x 8" square as a swatch and use as a dishcloth.
CROSS-STITCH
- Want to make ornaments or miniatures? Instead of stitching over 2 threads on linen, stitch over one thread which reduces the finished piece by half.
- Using Q-snaps prevents creasing and stains from wooden hoops.
- When using over-dyed flosses complete one stitch at a time.
NEEDLEART
- Create ornaments from cross-stitch patterns using an 18 ct. mono canvas or 24 ct. Congress cloth.
- Try designing your own canvas by purchasing blank canvas and hand-painting the design onto the canvas and then stitching the design.
